National Library Week

April 10-April 16, 2016 is National Library Week, sponsored by the American Library Associated (ALA).  This year’s theme for National Library Week is “Libraries Transform”[i].  Libraries offer a wide variety of services that the many may not be aware of.  They can offer access to technology equipment, training, resources, and entertainment.  All of these benefits are in addition to the access of millions of books and literature – both paper and digital copies.

As Educators, therapists and parents, we know that reading is not only a source of entertainment, but it’s important for one’s educational and personal development, vocabulary enrichment, and language development as well.  Our students do well to read throughout the school year, but it is also beneficial to keep them reading and engaged throughout their summer and winter breaks as well.

In honor of the upcoming Summer Vacation and the celebration of National Library Week, included is a link that has lists of age-appropriate reading for your K-8 student: Education World Summer Reading Lists[ii].  Also included is a list of books suitable for High School students by education company, Pearson: Pearson High School Summer Reading List.[iii]

If you need to pick one of these books up for reading, you can always stop by your local public library and check it out!

“There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world.  Love of books is the best of all.” ~ Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis
